I'm not sure that I've ever seen an unpainted Oaxacan folk art alebrije animal before--usually they are quite brightly painted--but this looks to be an old one and I think much more expressive for its unpainted, weathered surface, looking almost primeval! I take him for a coyote, and one who has long lived in the deep wild as a loner. Wonderfully stark and highly empathetic, too.
8 1/2" l x 4 3/4" t x 2 1/16" w. and in good, aged condition, with some nice bleeding around the nails.
