This is large-scale for me--a tabletop chest (which with a little effort could also be mounted on the wall) with swing opening front door and interior shelf, all constructed of, and decorated with, pieces of crate wood. The chunky scale and improvisatory-feeling forms of the chip carved, nailed on pieces feel to me one part trampy, one part modernist, making me think a bit of the work of Louise Nevelson (which I deeply love.) An unusual one, and a useful one too, deep enough for stashing all sorts of things (kind of like a half-locker) and with a hook for keeping the front door latched and a carved knob for pulling it open. Of course it could also be flipped on its side and treated like a trunk. Definitely more rustic than fine, but an interesting and unusual piece that I find newly compelling each time I look at it.
17 9/16" x 10 1/4" x 9 3/4". Good condition, I'd guess c. 1930s-40s or so, with a rough, scratched up patch on the back side top, not visible otherwise. No international shipping.
