This Asian lacquer bowl is clearly Buddhist, with the Yin-Yang symbol repeating twice on the exterior and twice again on the interior. I love this particular red, and matte finish lacquer in general, and the shape of the bowl, with out-turned lip (which I believe denotes it as a monk's bowl, in which offerings would be presented). Plus what looks rather like the face of a tiger at the very center of the interior--simultaneously somewhat evocative of a crab! I imagine it now filled with mandarin oranges, but lovely just as it is.
7 5/8” in diameter x 4 7/16” t. A little lacquer loss around the lip, more notable in photos (magnified) than in person. Overall very nice condition, rich reds and blacks and gold. Late 19th/early 20th c. I believe.
