Man of the Wood, Wonderful Old Folk Art Burl Wood Carving

Regular price $225.00

I purchased this from a seller in Alabama, who inherited it from his picker-collector father 40+ years ago, and described it as having looked equally old then; my guess is earlyish 20th century. I wasn't completely certain it would be as good as I hoped--but happily it is even better! I recently bought and sold what turned out to be a piece by Moses Ogden; this is not, but it has a related sense of specialness and gravitas to it, really quite an elegant and powerful feeling piece. Carved of what I believe is burl wood, very heavy for its size, with just a bit of paint lending white and very dark blue/black to the eyes. Smooth surface to the wood, with a very rich, warm dry patina, and a wire hook on reverse, original to it I believe.

Approx 10 1/2" t x 4 1/12" w x 2 1/2" d and very heavy for its size. Beautifully aged condition, earlyish 20th century I believe, with a few scattered hairline splits to the surface of the wood from age/shrinkage as documented, pretty minor and I don't believe detracting.
