I found this board and this boxed checkers set separately, but I believe they are about of the same age, and they feel quite sympatico to me--so while one still needs chess pieces, at least one level of play (or practice) can commence! It is the carefully hand-inked letters and numbers that really sold me on this board, done I am sure by the Dr. Eli S. Jackson who signed his name equally carefully on the back--I presume as he set out to master the game of chess. I like to imagine him visiting the shop in Hamburg whose paper label is adhered to the reverse (and which I imagine also sold Froebel kindergarten blocks) to purchase it, then carrying it wrapped in brown paper, eager to begin.
Board: 10 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 3/4. Checkers box: 5 3/4" x 2 3/4" x 1 1/2" t. Checkers 1" in diameter. The checkers appear molded rather than treen but box is hardwood. Board shows a few stains--in the shape of game pieces, which I like! Otherwise very good condition.
