Virgin Mary with Immaculate Heart, c. 17th Century Spanish Folk Art Carving

Regular price $145.00

This one! I purchased her from a seller in Spain, from whom I've purchased a few other wonderful old things in the past--and when I saw this little carving come available, holding heart to her chest, there was NO WAY I was going to let her get away. C. 17th century Spanish, carved wood with polychrome, with centuries of handling having worn and smoothed that wood, given the surface a sheen. Certainly it is the Madonna herself, with immaculate heart symbolizing her joys and sorrows, virtues and imperfections, love for God and Jesus, and compassion for all mankind--and how not to feel deep love for this Mary in return??! With wonderfully crude face and the best little hands with defined finger carved into her chest, holding and framing her heart. Wonderful, with what I'd call a deeply holy presence, better in person.

5 3/8" t x 2" w x 1 7/8" d and in beautiful much aged and handled condition.
