Not totally my usual sort of this for the shop, but I happened upon this 1979 lithograph, titled "Thicket" (edition of 10) by still-active Boston area artist Peter Wagner and it resonated to me in all sorts of ways--and the more time I spend with it the more I love it. My first thought, at this particular moment, was to read the three "X"s as a row X chromosomes, and so as stand ins for women, forming a blockade, (i.e. hands off my body, thank you very much.) At the same time the triple X evokes the erotic, XXX--here, ensnared in gestural vine-like lines, feeling like spot-lit enticements into a shadowy thicket, literal or metaphoric. Obstacle and invitation, boundary and borderland, material and absence, assertion and cancellation, to my eye and mind lots swirled up in this in a very good way.
