Portrait of Family in Paper Hats, c. 1940s Snapshot Photo

Clearly a day for celebration, but what I think makes this snapshot great is that every one of these five looks as if having their own set of private thoughts; nothing simple or saccharine feeling about it. The dog, too! And each paper hat looks to be unique. Maybe it is the rake of light across the face of the young man, or the expression on the face of the mother, or the father in a different way, but this feels to me both quite tender and also a bit bittersweet.
