This carving, which I purchased from a mostly mid-century dealer with a really nice eye, just struck me--with every turn it seems just about to resolve into something, like a pair of embracing figures, or a figure carrying a child, but it never quite does and so feels perpetually elusive and dynamic. From a few angles it also really appears as if there are the features of a face, or two, trapped just below the surface, waiting to emerge!
9 1/2 t x 3 3/8 d base and in good condition. Mid 20th c. I believe, perhaps a little earlier. Unsigned.
