Rosina Farmer, Charming 1851 Signed Ink and Watercolor Portrait in Profile in Original Frame

Regular price $285.00

I really love a 19th century miniature portrait, but much prefer a painted silhouette to a hollow cut one, as for me it is all about the details and feeling the presence of the hand. This one is is signed and dated (1851 it looks to me, 1850-something for sure) and attributed on the back of the frame as portraying a Rosina Farmer, noted as being 55 years old in 1865, so I presume in her early 40s here. I love her face, looking bright eyed and open and honest and true, and especially the handling of the lace of her collar, and more down both her back and her front, plus a leaf-like flourish in her hair, too--all feeling like a celebration of mark making and adding up to what feels like a joyful portrait of a good woman, very full of life.

6 13/16" x 5 5/8" framed; 4" x 2 3/4" sight. Excellent condition.
