A relatively rare snapshot of bathers on the beach at Absury Park, New Jersey, c. 1920 I believe, complete with the woman at center sporting a swim suit bearing the name of the seaside resort, which was established in 1871. Just outside the frame of the photo to the left would be the crowded boardwalk above. What I love about this snapshot, though, is its intimacy and specificity. What a strong looking pair of women standing at center and directly facing the camera, and what a poetic sort of composition, with the children and rope pulled taut on the diagonal to the right creating a sort of perfect triangle or pyramid (a la Leonardo)--and, with the post extending straight up behind the older woman at center, hard not to think of crosses and holy trinities! In any case, quite a striking and also nuanced image.
