Striking 1960 Japan-US Centennial Japan Tourist Assoc. Double-sided Fan

Regular price $40.00

It takes a pretty striking paper fan to get me excited, but this one did--does; between the lush red and silver and gold, and the evocation of waves cresting across it, I think it is really quite stunning. And with the image of a ship inside silver circled insignia to boot. Double sided; with the only notable difference being the inclusion of "Japan Tourism Association" on one side. The fan commemorated the hundred year anniversary of The Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Japan, signed in 1858 and ratified in 1860, which established diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries and opened Japan to trade with more countries.

18" across open, corner to corner. 10 3/4" x 1" closed. Very good condition, crisp and bold, just light wear, silkscreen on heavy paper sewn to bamboo frame.
