I found these two together in New Hampshire and think they are perfectly complimentary, so am offering them as a pair. Both lacquered papier mache, Georgian period British I believe, and I think meant to mimic tortoiseshell, but what I love about them is how much the black and red painted decoration resembles grain painting, super lush and painterly on the larger and looking as if applied with finger tips on the smaller. Like paint decorated American wooden furniture and boxes, but in the form of small lacquered snuff boxes, and nicely shaped too.
Larger: 3 3/4" x 2" x 1. Smaller: 2 3/8" x 1 1/2" x 1". Both in very good antique condition, no lacquer loss, hinged and decorated on the undersides too. The hinge on the larger one is a bit more delicate/just a tiny bit loose on one end, stable but making one want to take a little care with it.
