The loveliest example of a figurative slingshot as I believe I've ever seen, and just a marvelous carving--which I take as a tender portrayal of the love of a mother for her child (and determination to use a slingshot or any other means necessary to protect him!) I am pretty certain this is Guatemalan, where the slingshot is a traditional handicraft, distinguishable by the forked end, which would be strung with the sling; one sees these incorporating a range of imagery--from the animal kingdom, Mayan and Catholic iconography, myths, historic events, etc. The beauty of the carving on this one (her hair! and face! and the echo of her arms and those of her child) and the surface wear from handling indicate it is an old one, c. early 20th I would think. Wonderful.
6 1/4" l x 1 1/4" w x 5/8" thick. Excellent, perfectly aged condition--wear from handling just where it should be, and color of the paint just radiant.
