Small Antique Punch Paper Embroidery of Dog: Innocence

I continue to be fascinated by these old punch paper embroideries because of the way image and text were combined--the more unexpected the combination the better. I might have expected "loyal friend" or "my pet" to accompany this dog, but instead "innocence"--which makes this dog seem rather holy! (And, as so many of these were religiously oriented, it  makes it feel almost as if this pup on his pillow were a stand in for Jesus!) And so, a good one in many ways!

3 3/4” x 2 1/2” and in very good condition. Done in wool yarn on perforated paper. Late 19th I believe.
