I know from the seller in Virginia I purchased this from that it came from the personal collection of a senior curator at the Smithsonian who died about 15 years ago. I am confident it is Pre-Columbian, Central/South American. It is just a small fragment, but I find the face wonderfully expressive, with a great sense of soulfulness and also immediacy about it, with the open mouth feeling as if crying out with some urgency across many hundreds of years.
2 5/8" t x 1 7/8" w x 1 1/8" d. No cracks or repairs. It will stand up nicely if leaned slightly against something (I've shown it sitting inside an old treen lid, resting against the lip.
