I found this one in upstate NY near Albany, and believe it to be American, late 19th century, though it is unsigned. Perhaps he once hung side by side with his wife, in ornate gold frames with oval shaped mats--but I think he would be quite excellent in a barber shop now, especially one favoring handlebar mustaches! Quite skillfully painted, and larger than life, with piercing blue eyes and flushed pink cheeks; he looks to me as if just at that time in life when one finds oneself no longer young but rather firmly planted in adulthood.
28 3/4" X 23 1/2", oil on canvas. A few holes in the canvas, as detailed, which in this case feels very much all of a piece with it.
