Lots of little odds and ends today that I've had sitting around--things I came across somewhere or another and found too special or tender or full of life not to bring home. (A more disciplined dealer would leave things like this behind as there's no profit in them, but that's not me, and really I feel no choice in the matter!) And so this curious little drawing, rendered "in memoriam" for a Gulielmi Stark at age 70; I first thought an older woman, but the name I believe is a male one, Latin for William--and this Gulielmi is furthered granted the honorific of "nobilissimus" - latin for most noble one! And so if feels to me there's quite a life and love and story embedded in this little portrait, attested to by its survival too--and didn't it just feel that way at first glance too?
5 5/8" x 4 3/8" and in good condition, graphite on faintly lined paper, with old fold lines as evident.
