I believe this beautiful carved and painted Pacific Northwest Native American totem pole is from the carved of pine, and likely dates from sometime between the 1920s and 40s. Made for the tourist trade, it is early examples like this that I keep an eye out for, which differ radically from newer examples, from the quality of the carving to the care taken with the painting, which has softened in color beautifully over the years. It may be that the base (attached by screw) on this is newer than the carving itself, but it too has a fair amount of age and I think suits it just fine. Really a beautiful example, in excellent condition, with a terrific patina.
14 1/4" t & 3 5/8" diameter with base; carving itself is 13 1/4" tall x 1 1/16" wide and deep. Excellent condition, with no splits, cracks, or notable chips or dings, and very minor paint loss.
