This may be my favorite ex voto retablo I've had in the shop, in significant part because it is such a singular one! I love the way it is divided into three distinct sections, almost like cells on a storyboard reading from right to left, beginning with this tragic but very charmingly depicted figure tumbling from ornate, gold painted staircase, hat flying down ahead of him! I really love the kneeling, praying figure at center, too, giant candle before him and what looks like an all seeing eye overhead, and then Christ on the cross as left, painted in blues and surrounded in gold. Love.
10" x 7", with some wear to the paint and scratches as there should be--perfect. On the reverse appears to be a first attempt at sketching out the staircase. One hole at top center and another at top right for hanging; left top corner is lost. I would guess 1920s-40s or so.
