The more I'm out looking at things, the more the fields of things attracting me grows. Hooked rugs are not something I’ve dipped into much, in part because the very singular ones I really fall in love with tend to be well beyond my reach. But then there’s one like this, just all about color and pattern and labor, satisfying to my eye like building blocks and color charts, and tactile to boot. I of course also love it for its moments of disruption and improvisatory problem solving—a small green square within in a yellow one, or black within dark green - I assume when its maker ran out of the other color.
48” x 29 1/2”. It shows some loss/fraying around the edges, which I’ve documented pretty thoroughly, much of it which would be fairly easy to clean up with a few stitches here and there to hold the loose threads underneath. It could also be stretched and hung. Aside from the edges it is in very good condition, clean and bright, without holes and odor free. C. 1920s I believe.
