A marvelous example of an "interior" watercolor, which I believe would have been done with the practical purpose for representing the proposed design for a room, or as an exercise for a decorator in training. This one feels to me like a flight of whimsy--pure ornamental pleasure! The model ship with gold sails at center features a pirate flag with skull and cross bones, flying right in front on the peacock on the textile hanging behind it, which I take, along with the painted decoration on chairs and chest, as Pennsylvania Dutch. To my eye completely cheeky and playful, and bright and crisp, and just the sort of thing that makes me want to find more like it.
16" x 9 3/8". Very good condition, watercolor on card weight paper.
