I purchased this one from a favorite, longtime dealer in the Hudson River Valley, whose shop I never leave empty handed. Right up my alley, I believe this folk art watercolor portrait dates to the fairly early 19th century--executed on paper that was that was then cut out, along with her hand-written in ink name, and adhered to pale blue backing paper. I have found an Elisabeth Hemling of Lancaster PA, born April 18, 1796 (it is just about her birthday!) and believe this is very likely her, probably painted in the 1820s or so. I just love her, from her curious, bright blue eyed gaze down to those tiny black laced shoes. And in a great period dark red painted primitive frame, with original glass.
12 1/2 x 10 1/4 framed, original glass. Sight: 9 1/2 x 7 1/8”. Overall good condition, with a little patch of water staining to the blue paper around her head. Wired for hanging.
