You can tell I went to an estate sale this week --- where, much more than at antique shops or shows, one really never knows what one might find... like these! I think they're really fun and also quite fabulous, slab built with hand-formed handles, distinctive faces, and wonderful hand-drawn/painted details; I just love the color and patterning on those feathers! Signed (incised) E Bolz (for Elaine Bolz) on the undersides - bio below.
Both in excellent vintage condition. One is slightly larger than the other. Larger: 5 1/4" x 4" x 3 5/16" t. Both about 3" across at rim. Sold as a pair.
Elaine Bolz received a BFA degree from Ohio Wesleyan University with a major in painting, then studied and worked in ceramics in Seattle, WA, and subsequently Massachusetts. Since 1987 she has been based in Corrales, New Mexico where she maintains a ceramic studio and small gallery, and exhibits nationally in galleries and invitational and juried shows. Made of white clay, her pieces are slab-built and sculpted, airbrushed and painted with underglazes and glaze and fired at least 3 times. "My goal is to create sculptural work in
which the natural world is viewed as marvelous and beautiful, as
something to be honored and protected. My desire is to produce pieces
that have beauty, fantasy, and an element of soft surprise."
