I've developed such an attraction to1 9th c. full plate tintypes with hand-painted details, each with its own particular character, and more often than not with a compelling strangeness and intensity, and I think is very much the case here. This one for me is all about this woman, with her wide, soulful eyes staring straight at--into!--us, with her straight-lipped mouth giving nothing away. And with that soulful intensity perfectly enhanced/further focused by the sparse but specific painted details: gold earrings and brooch and rings, and wonderful lace collar. With some toning to the tintype I presume from how original framed, though it almost appears as if that oval frame is part of the image itself.
8 1/2" x 6 7/16". Irregular shape as evident and assorted light surface scratches and scuffs, which I think enhance the sense of aura. No notable dings or bends.
