Pure love. I paid a good bit for this one--Pennsylvania, late-ish 19th c.I believe, likely done by a schoolgirl--but there was no way I could walk away from it, and I'll be very glad to keep it for myself...That green cat! And those kittens! I am not sure if another (purple) kitten at left, or perhaps a little hen (?) with either a ball, or an egg (!) at its feet. To my eye, this is just about the purest embodiment of the joys of a naive/folk watercolor as I can imagine--completely full of life , tremendously expressive but also perfectly distilled, and wonderfully contemporary feeling, too, with the colors and shapes of patterning on that green cat, for example, feeling like an abstract painting! And then its front leg, painted yellow as if for emphasis, looking like a human arm raised in a gesture of protectiveness toward its kittens, or maybe about to intervene! In the perfect period frame and I think just so good down to the last detail.
10" x 6 1/2" framed, under glass in a wonderful, character-full period frame, as found. Watercolor in excellent condition, bright and super vivid.
