A beauty of a photograph, crystal clear, richly tonal, very atmospheric, and with a with lots packed into it. Due north of this sweet looking boy (with the elbow of his sweater worn entirely through) is a woman standing in the doorway of the house, I imagine his mother, who looks to be very pregnant, watching over the scene and making for a nice echo with the parental sort of affection this boy seems have for this young cow. Along the very bottom edge of the image a soulful looking dog has just made it into the frame, and at far right a couple at work, him with an axe and hand to his brow as is exhausted (and with a pile of scraps to the far right of the barn making it and the second I take for a woman, in a floppy hat, standing next an old plow or cart and facing the camera. Portraits upon portraits, of people, place, lives, work, time passing. Lovely.
7 15/16" x 4 11/16" and in excellent condition. Late 19th/very early 20th c. I believe, found in Maine.
