Found together with the early marbled pair I just listed, this unusual early 19th c. mochaware / creamware cup immediately made me think of Helen Frankenthaler--such a modern and rather 1970s lux feel to that gestural rust and brown and cream! British I believe, where I've found just a few other examples out there of this dip glazed color combination. With a satisfying recessed lip and nicely detailed applied handle. I would be very glad to hold on to this one and the other pair too, to start a small mochware collection featuring only the most unusual, painterly examples!
2 3/4" t x 2 1/2" d; 3 1/2" across at handle. Good antique condition, no cracks or repairs, just small chips around the rim, mostly just glaze chips (all as documented, with magnification) and light staining to the interior. There is a fleck of clay, glazed over in the chocolate brown, adhered to the body of the cup - original to its making, and the sort of thing I think just makes more special.
