I look at a good number of ships in bottles, but am not sure I've ever seen one done in such deeply recessed (push up) bottom--let alone incorporating that indented glass bottom so dramatically into the scene! The bottle is thick pale green blown glass, with some nice big air bubbles in it, and that deep concave bottom serves as a high perch for what looks to me like a tower and a fortess--though it also looks a rather like a lighthouse! Several small painted wooden houses elsewhere (I think of them as early Erzgebirge style) plus two hand-painted (I believe) American flags, and green sprigs for bushes or trees all around them. Then this intricately constructed three mast ship, with dense matrix of threads pulled in every direction, including very gracefully through to the bow. Found in Maine, c. 1900 or so I believe, excellent antique condition, with a thick layer of wax over the cork keeping it forever sealed.
12" l x 3 1/16" in diameter and in excellent condition.
