Certainly this was made to function as a frame, but I'd be just as inclined to leave it empty and hang it just as it is, so lovely. All carved from one piece of wood, with a wonderful play of curves, angles, and straight lines, and clad in black and red paint, time softened but still strong, with the monogram E. M.F painted in cursive along the bottom edge of the frame. Clearly made with lots of love for a very loved one, with hearts everywhere. Super.
11" x 6 7/8" overall. Frame niche, measured from backside, approx 4 1/8" x 2 3/8". Beautiful antique condition, perfect. Mid 19th c or so I would guess, and would guess Pennsylvania, with notes taped to the reverse re. provenance - letting us know (I believe) that the E.M.F was a Maude Findley, and that this frame was given at some later date to a D.A.E. King.
