This fabulous, rare vintage circa 1940s wicker picnic basket set, made in England for Abercrombie & Fitch and designed for auto excursions, includes two hot and cold thermoses, each with two plastic cups that stack one on top of the other under their red exterior lids, and a long, lidded metal sandwich canister. A super fun and stylish inspiration for a road trip!
Abercrombie & Fitch was founded in 1892 in downtown Manhattan as a store selling professional gear to professional outdoorsmen, expanding in the first quarter of the 20th century to become "The Greatest Sporting Goods Store in the World." (In 1929 the company outfitted Charles Lindberg for his his historic flight across the Atlantic Ocean.) It was not until the 1980s that the company was purchased by Limited Brands and became the sort of chain as we know it today.
The basket measures 18 inches tall by 12.5" inches wide and 4.75" deep. The leather of the strap closure for the box is somewhat stiff/cracked, though still latches, and there is one crack in the exterior red cap of one of the thermoses. The set is otherwise in good overall condition.
