Near impossible to read the hand-painted cursive text along the bottom of this one, though I did manage for decipher the year, 1936. But what a marvelously expressive painting, much better in person--hard to capture the deep lapis colored ground and the creams and blacks of the figures simultaneously, but they're rich and bold and glow-y all at once. For me, about as earnestly holy feeling as could be, centered around the single flaming candle held aloft by crudely painted figure at center veiled almost entirely in black. Hard to imagine a more motherly, empathetic Madonna than this one too, with wonderfully large hands and points-of-light-like polka dots patterning her robe. Great rosary dangling from the sleeve of her companion, too. Just my sort of retablo.
10 1/8" x 7 7/16" and in good, nicely aged condition. Text along bottom difficult to read, as noted; not sure if it was ever very legible. No notable dings or bends. Much better in person.
