It's been quite a long time since I had a notebook approaching the beauty of this one--and I've never had one with SO MANY boldly and ornately penned fraktur type headers, populating more of its 81 pages than not. The headers--sometimes filling the entire page--are unusual, too, and to my sensibilities often quite poetic: "of the Regular Bodies," "Drains and Canals," "Of Bricklayers' and Masons Work, "Directions for Measuring Quarries and Coalheaps," etc. Or, simply, "RULES," or "OBSERVE." Just gorgeous, and wioth the lettering often feeling very contemporary feeling. And useful too should one need to measure a milldam! Some lovely diagrams and calculating, too. Photos do a very good job of documenting (not comprehensive, but I do always feel like it is my duty to document these singular things thoroughly before they leave my hands.) C. 1820s-40s I believe.
9 1/8" x 7 1/2". 81 pages by my count, all filled front and back. At some point, a few pages appear to have been removed, and there is one loose page; otherwise all are well bound, with hand-marbled cover. Bleed through on a few, but in a beautiful and evocative way. No tears, paper not fragile, black ink clear and bold and wonderful.
