I have a dealer-collector friend who refers to amateur ceramic sculpture as "lumpy clay" and collects figures of that ilk. This unglazed clay woman has some of that aspect to her for sure, and was definitely made by an amateur, maybe a young student. But I also find her rather elegant, and wonderfully posed/poised--with those slab like legs/feet revealed at the end of her skirt making it feel as though she's very firmly grounded and forever planted, never to be moved! I also really love how whatever that is at her waist draped over her folded hands (a muff?) looks very much like a third arm! Nice scarf too. She makes me happy.
8" l x 4" w x 7 1/2" t and in good vintage condition, with just a bit of darkening (yellowing) to the clay in a few spots, no matter. No chips, cracks or other issues.
