RESCUED!!!
Japanese Sumida Gawa pottery was made for export to the West from the late 1800s to the 1920s, taking its name from the Sumida river running near the Asakusa pottery district near Tokyo. Heavy and sculpted, it usually features applied three-dimensional figures, like the charming little man hanging onto the lip of this one!
Broken in a number of places, this piece has been carefully glued back together by prior owners, who I think valued it as much as I do! (I found him at a wonderful estate sale in Kansas City, filled with marvelous antiques including several other examples of Sumida pottery.)
I am making this piece a rescue for this reason, though I think 'as is' it nicely embodies the Japanese philosophy of Kitsugi --embracing breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. If you'd like to make it yours, just email me at criticaleyellc@gmail.com to let me know, as well as what you feel is fair to pay for it (nothing is ok, I just want it to go to a good home) and I'll send you a link to make it yours!
