Randall Darwall (1948-2017), the masterful textile artist who created this “Eyelash Scarf,” conceived of dying and weaving as means of setting up a conversation between colors, and his finished, wearable pieces as kinetic sculpture. This handwoven scarf, a version of which is featured in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum, is truly extraordinary; to wear it is to feel like a superstar. Made of hand-dyed silk thread, it can happily be worn fall, winter and spring, and when not being worn I’d definitely hang or drape it somewhere where it can be seen. Absolutely exquisite.
Darwall received his BA in art history from Harvard and a Master's in education from RISD. He was a faculty member at the Cambridge School of Weston, Massachusetts and has since taught at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee. His work is included in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Arts & Design, New York, among others.
