Handmade in Portugal, this is a lovely, nicely weighty box for jewelry or small treasures. The stone on the top of the box appears to be Red Jasper, and I believe the box is pewter. It features pretty incised detailing around the perimeter of the top, as well as two solid decorative lines along its front. The lid is attached with hinges and opens with ease. Beautiful on a vanity or dresser, in a powder room, as part of a grouping of interesting boxes, or anywhere, really, where it might be seen and used!
The box is stamped "Handmade in Portugal as well as with a bow and arrow mark and the word "Medieval." Note: the height of the box is 2 inches due to the rise in the center; at its lowest point it measures 1 inch high.
I purchased this piece from an estate in Boston that included a wonderful mix of interesting antique and mid-century objects collected through travels around the world.
