The last of three loose 1887 notebook pages of very urgent looking writing I purchased a month or so ago from a dealer friend in Maine--as found, though I wish I had the rest of the notebook they came from! I take this for cipher writing, written using a secret code, perhaps made for passing between one school boy and another. The graphite letters were certainly written while applying a whole lot of pressure to the pencil--suggesting that the writer had something very important to convey! And on the reverse of this one, what I believe was some text written earlier, clearly in a different hand--but sharing a similar sense of urgency as it proclaims: God Loves You / Christ Died for You / Where will You Spend Eternity! And then a pasted down 1887 calendar, Hale's Honey cough remedy, and Christ and angles! I leally ove both the formal qualities and the semiotics of it all (all sort of signs and symbols at play!)
7 3/4" x 6 1/8" and in good condition.
