It's the forlorn looking dog in the distance here (looking a bit like a little black pig!) that really sold me on this painting--what an empathetic creature! With the cross perched out there on the peak, I presume that these two--Burmese mountain dogs I believe, with small barrels around their necks--have been out on a rescue and come to the end of the trail. And so I take this painting as portraying a moment of mourning. In the wake of the apparent loss of the one they were searching for, it seems the stately dog in the foreground wears his grief with quiet stoicism, while the little one expresses sadness with every inch of its body. Further, allegorically, it seems to me the painting could also be read as about nothing less than confronting the void!
14 1/4" x 11 3/8". Paint loss and wear at left, with mends to the canvas on reverse, as documented. Stable now, and feels all of a piece.
