Most Wonderful Antique Inuit Doll with Hand-drawn Leather Face

Regular price $175.00

Perhaps my favorite doll I've ever had, and I love a folk doll. This one is Inuit, late 19th c. or so, I believe, with the arms replaced at some point it appears, but otherwise all original, and very solid and sound. Of course the face breaks my heart--hand-drawn eyes, brows, and straight line of a mouth on hide--with the hide cinched together to form the nose, and then a hand-stitched seam running down from there like a scar. But also this beautifully faded hand-dyed dotted calico, with string tie at the waist, and these gorgeous hide boots, pieced together of scraps and sewn together with what appears to be sinew. Marvelously tender, wonderfully constructed, and just so beautiful.

14" t, approx 4 1/2" w. Arms likely replaced at some point, with much cruder stitching at the shoulders, and some loss to one boot, but overall in very good, beautifully aged and loved condition, sturdy and sound and very tightly stuffed. (Body is more stiff than soft, meant to stand or lay but not to fold at the waist.)
