I just love this image--taken in the very early days of the Salvation Army's existence in the United States, with this very committed looking young man proudly wearing his Salvation Army sweater, with lettering that looks to be embroidered . Founded in London in 1865 and arriving in the US in 1880, the mission of the Christian organization was and is to "bring salvation to the poor, destitute, and hungry by meeting both their 'physical and spiritual needs'" and from the beginning the Salvation Army employed young and diverse workers and volunteers. I love imagining the aspirations of this young man, book (pocket bible?) in hand, ready to change the world!
