A beautiful antique Makah/Nootka Northwest Coast Native American open rim bear grass and cedar bark basket, my favorite type of basket in the world. Much more common to find lidded examples of these, but I especially love ones like this that open out. Finely woven, lovely naturally dyed color on the striping that runs all the way around, warm honey tone to undyed bear grass, early 20th century I believe. With what looks to be an accession number carefully written on the underside.
Of a nice size at 6 1/16 x 4 11/16 x 2 13/16 t and has held its shape pretty well. Sound and stable, no losses that I can see, just a bit of irregularity to the form due to age. Displays beautifully, quite elegant.
