I like whimsies that feel singular, product of the particular skills and sensibilities of their particular makers, almost like portraits. This one is of that sort--the carver was not concerned with fineness or perfection, but they were creative and ambitious--making each segment different, and one with a rare ball inside a cage inside a cage! I also really like long thin whimsies of an architectural nature, feeling almost like levels or rulers taking the measure of things. The shapes of the longer "balls" here, stained and varnished a rich brown, keep reminding me of dates (the yummy fruit), too! A sweet one.
16 7/8" x 7/8" x 7/8". Good condition, stained and varnished. There is one small split, quite possibly incurred during its making, documented in last couple photos. No real matter, and it took me a while to notice it then a while to find it again.
