I believe the animal depicted on the lid of this beautiful presumed Japanese lacquer box is a Shi-shi or Shisa dog-- a creature resembling a cross between a lion and a dog that derives from Okinawan mythology and is perceived to be a ward protecting from evils. The dog appears to be leaping toward a ball or globe, decorated with gold and silver flowers and flourishes. The box itself, black lacquer with scalloped body, is really lovely, and holds four black lacquered coasters inside, decorated with the same ball and thread pattern.
The box measures 7" diameter and 3" tall overall, with the coasters measuring 4 3/4" in diameter. It is in excellent vintage condition.
