This Japanese hand-carved cedar (Cryptomeria) horny toad is totally amazing for the manner in which its carved form brilliantly corresponds to the patterns in the grain of the wood. Believed to bring good luck, particularly to those traveling, it makes sense that there would be a tradition in Japan of carving toads like this one that could be carried in a pocket—and surely this lovely little one would bring good fortune wherever he goes!
The toad measures 2 1/2" long x 1 7/8" wide x 1 1/4" tall and is in very good vintage condition. The year 1965 and "Japan" are carved on the bottom. The photos here were shot at 2x magnification, showing a few small scratches/cracks in the wood, barely visible to the eye.
