Wow, I find this so beautiful I'm almost inclined to change my name so as to have it as my monogram, or to take a human resources job--though I think the raised position of the period between the H and R somewhat somewhat evokes the absence of an E to make it "her." No later than early 19th century I believe, hand-carved of what I think may be walnut though I'm no good at identifying woods, and found in southern Maine. A rare and very lovely thing.
4 7/16" x 1 7/8" x 1 1/8" deep.A bit of loss to the wood along the top edge behind the "H" as evident. Very stable and sound, completely gorgeous patina.
