This is a small but stunning, exquisitely crafted brown and white vase by renowned California ceramist Leslie Thompson, (American, b.1945), who draws inspiration from sources including Native American craft, Op Art, and the work of M.C. Escher. The small vessel is made of high-fire porcelain coated with brown slip and incised, with extraordinary precision, to reveal the white body beneath.
The fineness of the detail on this piece is quite breathtaking, and then one discovers that the vessel's interior is glazed a beautiful blue-green--such a lovely, unexpected surprise.
The vase, which is signed on the bottom, measures 3 1/4" tall with a diameter of 3 1/2" and an opening of 1 5/8". There is a tiny hairline crack that runs from the lip about 1/3 of the way down the side of the vessel--this is documented in the photos, which are shot at 2x magnification as the crack is difficult to see without magnification.
