Big Stick: Dramatic c. Early 1900s Odd Fellows Folk Art Staff with Polychrome

Regular price $275.00

Quite a thing, found in mid-coast Maine last weekend, and which I have very much enjoyed carrying around since! Taller than a walking stick, and with a dramatic crook, I would call this a staff and have to think it had a ceremonial function--surely wielded by an Odd Fellows Grand Master as an object of power, and seems quite an effective one for keeping the flock in line! With a beautifully carved face, black (finely eye-lashed) eyes, long black beard and mustache, plus tall hat emblazoned with FLT (Friendship, Love and Truth) links in gold. I would be inclined to hang it resting on a nail or two on the wall, carving out a very dramatic, snake-like line, and at the ready for whenever, and however, one might need it. Fabulous!

51 1/2" long. Carved head (beard to hat) is 7" t x 1 7/8" in diameter. 47 1/4" tall at crook in walking stick (grip height.) Good condition, with scattered losses to the black paint on the length of the wood as shown (would be pretty easy to touch up if desired); next to no loss to the paint on the carved head.) Most wear and some roughness to the bottom tip as documented, no real matter.
