You know that color cubes are among my favorite things ever--and every time I have a set, especially a big one like this, I spend a while playing around with them. (Good for the eye and the brain, both.) I also love how every set is different--product of many years of play (and rare to find a set that was not much played with, attesting to the enduring appeal of these) and also the properties of the paint itself, the qualities of which indicate their age (the paint on the early sets was far superior!) And sometimes one finds a set so beloved that a homemade box/tray was constructed for them, as is the case here-- an excellent one, in old red paint, which makes the blocks look very much like a checkerboard when arranged that way, too. At some point two blocks were lost from the set and so two substitutes, painted gray on one side, were made to complete the grid. It wouldn't be very hard to find a couple of actual color cubes to plug in instead if desired, but for me it's all of a whole, and of a history, and becomes a make do sort of a thing. Love.
