It's been a little while since I've had a ex voto retablo painting in the shop--they seem to be getting evermore precious and hard to come by--so I was especially glad to find this beauty in southern Maine this week. Perfectly succinct but full of feeling, with all focus on the thankful couple kneeling beside their simple bed, praying to the Santo Niño de Atocha (Christ child) who floats on a cloud at upper left. Wonderfully painted figures--I especially love the treatment of the head scarf and skirt on the kneeling woman, looking very much like a sari. With the perfect dark green ground, and beautifully aged, absent any inscription.
9 3/8" x 7 1/8", with general wear, all to the good. With a hole punched through the tin top center for hanging.
